Lost Something on a Tokyo Train After a Night Out?

If you notice a missing bag or phone on your way back from an izakaya, first write down the journey you actually made. A station name alone may not identify the operator. This guide covers Tokyo Metro and Toei inquiry routes; it is not a single lost-property service for every Tokyo railway.

Make a short journey note

Record the date, approximate time, line, direction, boarding and exit stations, and where you last remember seeing the item. Add its colour and a distinguishing feature. Keep private identification details in your own notes and share them only through the operator's official channel. If the item might still be at a bar, contact that venue separately.

Tokyo Metro: check the operator and storage location

Tokyo Metro's official guide explains that belongings on a through-service train may be found on the connecting operator's route. Use its operator links when your train continued onto another railway. Do not assume that every train using a Metro station is handled by one collection office.

Metro also warns that an item handed in at night may reach Iidabashi two days later rather than the next day. Confirm its current storage location before travelling. The Iidabashi centre is outside the Namboku Line fare gates and lists collection hours of 09:00–20:00 daily. Those are not the Customer Relations Center's phone hours, which are 09:00–17:00. Check the official retrieval instructions and required documents for your circumstances.

Toei: accepting a message is not answering it

Toei's official inquiry page accepts chat inquiries around the clock, but lists response hours of 09:00–22:00. Inquiries received after 21:00 are answered in order from 09:00 the following day. All times here are Japan time. A late-night submission therefore does not promise an immediate answer or a confirmed match.

Before making a collection trip

Ask which office has the item, when you can collect it, and what to bring. A useful checklist is: operator, inquiry reference if supplied, confirmed location, collection hours, and required documents. Keep a reply saying an inquiry was received separate from a reply identifying your belongings. For a JR or other railway journey, use that operator's official lost-property guidance instead of applying Metro or Toei hours.
