How Much Does a Night Out in Japan Cost?

Japan can be surprisingly affordable for nightlife, but costs vary wildly depending on where you go. A night of standing bars and ramen can cost under ¥3,000. A night of cocktail bars, taxis, and premium whisky can cost more than ¥15,000. This guide gives realistic budgets so you can plan your evening without surprises.

Budget night: ¥2,000 to ¥4,000

A budget night usually means tachinomi, chain izakayas, convenience store drinks, or a simple ramen finish. You might spend:

  • One or two drinks at a standing bar: ¥600 to ¥1,200
  • Two small dishes: ¥500 to ¥1,000
  • Late-night ramen: ¥900 to ¥1,300
  • No taxi, no premium cocktails

If you want to drink cheaply, read our guide to senbero, Japan's culture of getting pleasantly tipsy for around ¥1,000.

Standard izakaya night: ¥4,000 to ¥7,000

This is the most common tourist budget. A few drinks, shared food, and maybe a second stop. Expect:

  • Cover or otoshi: ¥300 to ¥800 per person
  • Draft beer or highball: ¥400 to ¥700
  • Food dishes: ¥400 to ¥900 each
  • Two-hour nomihodai: ¥1,500 to ¥3,000 if available

For many visitors, ¥5,000 per person is a comfortable estimate for a good izakaya night without going overboard.

Cocktail bar night: ¥6,000 to ¥12,000

Japanese cocktail bars are world-class, but they are not the cheapest way to drink. A proper cocktail may cost ¥1,200 to ¥2,500. A small bar may also charge a cover fee.

Expect higher prices in Ginza, Roppongi, hotel bars, and famous whisky bars. The quality can be outstanding, but this is a sipping experience, not a budget drinking session.

Karaoke night: ¥2,000 to ¥6,000

Karaoke prices depend on time, day, and drink plan. Daytime is cheap. Late-night weekends can be much higher.

  • One hour, no alcohol: ¥500 to ¥1,500
  • Two hours with drinks: ¥2,000 to ¥4,000
  • All-night free time with alcohol: ¥3,000 to ¥6,000

Karaoke can be great value if you miss the last train because it gives you a room, drinks, and entertainment until morning.

Taxi costs after last train

The biggest surprise is often transportation. Trains stop around midnight, and taxis are expensive compared with many countries. A short taxi ride across central Tokyo may cost ¥2,000 to ¥4,000. A longer ride from Shinjuku to a suburban hotel can cost much more.

If you are on a budget, plan around the last train or choose karaoke / late-night food until the first train.

Hidden costs to know

The main "hidden" cost is otoshi or cover charge. It is normal, but it can add up if you visit several bars. Some small bars may also have service charges, music charges, or table charges, especially in entertainment districts.

Always check signs and menus if you are unsure. If a place has aggressive street touts, be careful — especially in Kabukicho or nightlife areas with host clubs.

Practical budget examples

  • Cheap bar hop + ramen: ¥3,000
  • Standard izakaya + second drink spot: ¥6,000
  • Yakiniku with drinks: ¥7,000 to ¥10,000
  • Cocktail bar evening: ¥8,000+
  • Missed last train + taxi: add ¥3,000 to ¥10,000
