Ordering Without Alcohol in Japan: Check the Drink, Not Just Its Name

Going to an izakaya with friends does not require choosing the same drink as everyone else. If you want a drink labelled 0.00% alcohol, ask for that specifically before ordering. A familiar bottle shape or a beer-like name is not enough to identify its contents.

Compare the actual product

Suntory lists All-Free as 0.00% alcohol, and Asahi lists Dry Zero as 0.00%. These are examples to help read a label, not a promise that a particular bar stocks them. Check the exact product served.

By contrast, Hoppy's manufacturer states 0.8% for the bottled drink before adding shochu. Ordering it without shochu does not turn it into a 0.00% drink. See the separate Hoppy guide for its usual ordering vocabulary.

Ask one clear question

Show this phrase: アルコール0.00%の飲み物はありますか? — Do you have a drink with 0.00% alcohol?

Ask to see the bottle or can if the menu is unclear. For a mixed drink, ask what goes into it rather than assuming its name tells you every ingredient. If the answer remains uncertain, choose a clearly identified alternative such as the tea or sparkling water offered on the menu.

Check the order as well as the drink

Confirm the price, serving size and any required food order or seat charge before sitting down. For a group plan, ask whether each person can order separately or whether everyone must choose the same package. Do not assume a soft drink automatically removes other charges.

Can I simply leave out the spirit? Ask about the remaining ingredients; the Hoppy example shows why this alone is not a label check.

Will every bar have these brands? No availability was verified here. Check the current menu of your chosen venue.
