Your first night in Golden Gai

Plan a small, unhurried evening rather than trying to visit every bar. Decide what you need help with before paying for a tour.

Choose a guide or an independent evening

A guided outing may suit you if you want introductions, help ordering or a group to meet. Compare the actual route: a Shinjuku tour may spend much of its time in izakaya outside Golden Gai. Check how much time the selected package allows in the alleys.

Going independently gives you control over when to arrive and how long to stay. Read our Golden Gai area guide, identify a first stop and keep a second option. A booking is not required just to use barhop.jp.

Understand the bill before sitting down

Ask whether there is a cover or seating charge, what a drink costs and whether payment is cash only. Ask the same questions at each new venue; one bar's terms do not apply to the next. If the answer does not fit your budget, choose another place before ordering.

Respect entrance notices, available seats and the owner's invitation. Ask before taking photographs, particularly when other customers are in view. Keep your group small and your conversation considerate in a compact room.

Plan the end of the evening

Check the actual last train for your destination and travel date using the operator's timetable. Save the hotel name and address before leaving. If you expect to stay later, compare a nearby hotel or your return transport before spending your evening's budget.

For a tour, confirm the finish location separately from the meeting point. Neither a guide nor a station-adjacent hotel removes the need to check your route home.
